A 40-foot sperm whale was found dead on the Oregon coast on Tuesday, prompting an investigation by officials.
The carcass was discovered along the shoreline, and officials from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife are working to determine the cause of death.
Sperm whales are the largest toothed whales in the world, and they are typically found in deep waters. It is unclear what caused the whale to come ashore.
Once the cause of death has been determined, officials will need to decide how to dispose of the carcass. Sperm whales are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, so they cannot be towed out to sea or buried on land.

A member of one of the world's largest whale species was found washed up on an Oregon shore this week, according to officials.
The whale, a 46-foot-long sperm whale, was discovered on Sunset Beach State Park on Monday. It is the second sperm whale to wash ashore in Oregon in recent weeks.
Officials are still investigating the cause of death, but they believe the whale may have died from natural causes.
