Voyager 1 Update Today

Voyager 1 and 2 Continue Interstellar Journey, Making Contact with NASA

Sub Headline: Voyager 1 Resumes Communication After Five Months of Silence

NASA Eyes on the Solar System

In a remarkable feat, both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 have ventured beyond the confines of our solar system and continue to explore the uncharted regions of the Universe. These intrepid spacecrafts have pushed the boundaries of human exploration and provided valuable insights into the vastness and complexity of our celestial surroundings.

Voyager 1 Re-establishes Contact

On Saturday, April 5, Voyager 1 finally re-established contact with NASA after five months of sending back only garbled data. The interstellar explorer had stopped transmitting readable science and engineering information back to Earth on November 14, 2023, even though mission controllers could confirm that the spacecraft was still receiving their signals.

On March 1, NASA engineers sent a command that coaxed Voyager 1 into sending a readout of its Flight Data System (FDS) memory. From this readout, the team was relieved to confirm that only a small portion of the memory had been affected by a glitch.

Cause of Data Loss

NASA's initial investigation revealed that the data loss was likely caused by a temporary issue with the spacecraft's Attitude Control System (ACS), which is responsible for maintaining Voyager 1's orientation in space. The ACS uses thruster jets to make small adjustments to the spacecraft's position and ensure that its antenna is pointed towards Earth for communication.

Fortunately, the issue appears to have resolved itself, and Voyager 1 is now transmitting data normally. The spacecraft is currently approximately 15.2 billion miles (24.5 billion kilometers) from Earth and is traveling at a speed of over 38,000 miles per hour (61,000 kilometers per hour) relative to the Sun.

The Future of Voyager Missions

Both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 continue to operate in good health and are expected to remain operational for several more years. NASA plans to continue monitoring the spacecrafts and collecting valuable scientific data from their unique vantage points in interstellar space.

The Voyager missions have been a testament to human ingenuity and the enduring spirit of exploration. Their continued journey through the vastness of the cosmos will undoubtedly lead to further discoveries and inspire generations of future explorers and scientists.
